The Balochistan government has launched a Rs1.58 billion School Meal Program aimed at improving nutrition and health outcomes for primary school students in Quetta. The initiative is being introduced on a pilot basis and is expected to benefit thousands of children enrolled in government schools.

According to official details, the project carries a total cost of Rs1.579 billion, with Rs315.9 million allocated for the current phase. The school meal initiative is part of a broader provincial strategy focused on improving child health, education, and nutrition indicators across Balochistan.

The provincial government is also investing in several related development programs. A Comprehensive Maternal and Child Health Program worth Rs2 billion is currently underway to strengthen healthcare services for mothers and children. More than Rs228 million has been allocated for the project during the current year.

In addition, authorities are implementing a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project in schools to improve access to clean drinking water and better sanitation facilities. The scheme has a total estimated cost of Rs2 billion, with Rs200 million earmarked for ongoing work.

Another key development includes the establishment of a Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Facility at Eastern Bypass Quetta. The project is valued at Rs400 million, with half of the amount already allocated to support healthcare services for women and children.

Education and health experts have long emphasized that proper nutrition plays a crucial role in improving academic performance and reducing health risks among children. School feeding programs are widely recognized as an effective tool for combating malnutrition and supporting learning outcomes.

Provincial officials say these initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to investing in the future of Balochistan’s children. By focusing on nutrition, healthcare, sanitation, and school support programs, authorities aim to create healthier learning environments and improve public health indicators across underserved communities.

The launch of the school meal program marks an important step toward ensuring that children have access to the nutrition they need to learn, grow, and succeed in school.
