The Punjab School Education Department has decided to merge 555 more government schools with nearby institutions as part of its ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency of the public education system. The move targets schools with very low student enrollment and aims to make better use of available teachers and educational resources.
According to officials, the schools selected for merger are located within two kilometers of another government high or elementary school. Most of these schools have fewer than five enrolled students, despite having three teachers assigned to each campus. Authorities believe that continuing to operate such schools is not financially sustainable.
The education department said these schools were reviewed after repeated efforts to increase admissions failed. Even after being included in the government’s school outsourcing initiative, enrollment remained too low to justify independent operations.
Under the merger plan, students from the affected schools will be shifted to nearby government institutions where they will continue their education. Officials say the transition is intended to ensure that students have access to better classrooms, improved learning facilities, and a wider range of academic resources without disrupting their studies.

The latest decision will reduce the total number of government schools in Punjab to around 37,000. The provincial government has also outsourced nearly 13,000 public schools to private partners under reforms aimed at improving educational standards, increasing enrollment, and strengthening school management.
Education authorities maintain that the restructuring is designed to improve the quality of education rather than reduce access. Schools with extremely low enrollment require significant operational costs while serving only a handful of students. By merging these institutions with nearby schools, the government expects to utilize teachers, classrooms, and public funds more effectively.
However, the decision has sparked discussion among parents and education experts. Some believe the policy will help improve academic performance by providing students with better educational facilities, while others have raised concerns about travel distance, transportation, and the potential impact on children living in remote villages.
Officials have assured parents that the merger process will be carried out carefully and that every effort will be made to ensure students continue their education without interruption. The Punjab School Education Department says it will continue monitoring enrollment trends and may introduce additional reforms to strengthen the province’s public education system.
