The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Higher Education Department has introduced a new student e-attendance system in degree colleges across the province. The initiative will allow parents to receive attendance updates about their children through SMS alerts.
Under the new system, parents can be informed when their children miss classes without visiting the college. The department said the system is designed to improve attendance monitoring, parental involvement and transparency in colleges.
The system was inaugurated by Provincial Minister for Higher Education and Local Government Meena Khan Afridi at a ceremony held at a government degree college. Officials from the Higher Education Department, teachers, students, and representatives of Zong Telecom attended the event.
The Higher Education Department also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zong Telecom to support the digital attendance initiative. The partnership will help facilitate SMS-based communication between colleges and parents.

According to the department, parents will receive regular SMS notifications containing attendance information. The alerts can also indicate classes missed by students, giving families a quicker way to monitor their children’s college attendance.
The minister said the e-attendance initiative is part of the province’s broader digital transformation of higher education. The department has already introduced other digital measures, including an e-transfer system and a ranking mechanism for universities.
The government is also working on measures to support teachers serving in remote locations. The minister announced that a hard-area allowance would be introduced for teachers working in difficult and remote areas.
During the ceremony, the minister also announced plans for a modern hall at Government Degree College Peshawar. The facility is expected to provide students with improved space for educational and academic activities.
The new attendance system could make communication between colleges, students, and parents more efficient. It also represents another step toward bringing routine educational services online across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
