Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) is set to make history by hosting AAS-in-Asia, the flagship conference of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), becoming the first university in Pakistan to organize an academic event of this scale in the fields of humanities and social sciences.
The prestigious conference is expected to welcome more than 1,000 scholars from over 37 countries, creating one of the largest international academic gatherings ever held in Pakistan. Experts from leading institutions, including Harvard University, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, Yale University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, the University of Tokyo, the National University of Singapore, and Nanyang Technological University, are expected to participate.
Held under the theme “Centering Asia: Refiguring Connections, Recharting Futures,” the conference will focus on key issues shaping Asia, including politics, history, economics, culture, literature, anthropology, environmental studies, and international relations. The event aims to strengthen academic collaboration and encourage research partnerships across the region.

Dr. Adil Najam, President of WWF International and an internationally recognized scholar, will deliver the keynote address. His work on climate change, sustainable development, South Asian affairs, and global policy has earned worldwide recognition, making him one of the conference’s major highlights.
According to LUMS, hosting the conference represents a major achievement for both Pakistan and Lahore, offering an opportunity to showcase the country’s growing role in global higher education and research. University officials believe the event will help reshape international perceptions by highlighting Pakistan’s academic excellence and research potential.
The conference will also provide Pakistani researchers with a unique opportunity to present their work before an international audience without traveling abroad. To encourage wider participation, LUMS has established a Scholar Support Fund that will assist researchers from different regions of Pakistan in attending the event.
Previously, AAS-in-Asia conferences have been hosted by countries including South Korea, Japan, India, Indonesia, and Nepal. Bringing the event to Pakistan reflects increasing international confidence in the country’s academic institutions and its ability to host world-class scholarly events.
Registration for AAS-in-Asia is now open, with scholars, researchers, and students from around the world expected to gather at LUMS for discussions that will shape future research on Asia and strengthen global academic cooperation.
