The Punjab Education Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA) has started work on a major reform of the primary school curriculum, with Classes 1 to 5 set to receive a more concept-based and student-focused learning approach.
The reform aims to reduce the reliance on rote memorization and help children understand lessons through concepts, critical thinking and practical learning. The initiative focuses on strengthening the foundational years of education in Punjab.

Key points of the new curriculum plan:
- Classes 1 to 5 will be the initial focus of the reform.
- Existing Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) will be reviewed.
- Unnecessary and repeated content will be reduced.
- Greater emphasis will be placed on conceptual understanding.
- Students will be encouraged to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Teachers are expected to receive greater flexibility in classroom instruction.
PECTAA discussed the reform during the inaugural meeting of its Curriculum Advisory Committee in Lahore. Educationists, policymakers and representatives from several educational organisations participated in the process.
According to PECTAA, the existing primary curriculum has been criticised for being too content-heavy. The proposed changes are intended to create a streamlined curriculum that gives students a deeper understanding of important concepts instead of requiring them to memorise large amounts of material.
The reform is also expected to encourage more activity-based and inquiry-based learning inside classrooms. This could give teachers more room to use practical examples and classroom activities while teaching young students.
Another important development is the planned introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a compulsory subject for Classes 1 to 5 from the 2027-28 academic session, according to reports published in June. The proposed initiative is intended to familiarise children with modern technology from an early age.

The curriculum reform is therefore broader than simply changing textbooks. It is aimed at improving how primary-level students learn, understand and apply knowledge.
However, the final implementation details, including the approved curriculum, textbooks and exact rollout schedule, will depend on the relevant approvals and official announcements from Punjab’s education authorities.
For students and parents, the key change to watch will be the transition from memorization-focused learning toward concept-based education, which could significantly reshape primary classroom teaching across Punjab.
