The Sindh government has launched a major crackdown on ghost employees in the School Education Department, with more than 10,000 staff members set to lose their jobs after being found absent from duty for extended periods.
According to official reports, the action will affect a wide range of employees, including primary school teachers, junior elementary school teachers, naib qasids, watchmen, gardeners, and laboratory attendants. The move is part of the provincial government’s efforts to improve attendance, transparency, and accountability in public schools.
Officials said the School Education Department had already issued show-cause notices to the employees identified during verification. However, many failed to provide satisfactory explanations or report back to their assigned schools, leading authorities to proceed with disciplinary action.
Among all regions, Hyderabad Division recorded the highest number of ghost employees, with more than 2,000 staff members declared absent from service. Similar cases were also detected in Karachi, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, Larkana, and Shaheed Benazirabad, indicating that the issue is spread across multiple districts.
The provincial government has decided to begin the dismissal process in phases. Officials believe removing ghost employees will help ensure that salaries are paid only to staff who are actively performing their duties and will improve the quality of education in government schools.
Education authorities have also indicated that monitoring of staff attendance will continue through regular inspections, digital verification, and administrative checks to prevent the re-emergence of ghost employees. The initiative is expected to strengthen governance within the education sector and improve the efficient use of public funds.
The action reflects the Sindh government’s broader commitment to reforming the education system by promoting merit, accountability, and better service delivery. Authorities have maintained that strict action against absentee employees is necessary to ensure students receive uninterrupted education from qualified and regularly attending teachers.
Officials have advised all education department employees to remain compliant with attendance policies, warning that disciplinary action will continue against anyone found violating service rules in the future.
