Major Higher Education Reforms Planned as HEC Reviews Degree Programs Nationwide

Pakistan is set to undertake a major transformation of its higher education system after the government directed the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to conduct a nationwide review of university degree programs. The move aims to ensure that graduates are equipped with the skills needed in a rapidly changing global economy shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI), automation, digital technologies, and innovation.

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal emphasized that universities must prepare students for the future rather than for professions that are gradually losing relevance. He noted that technological advancements are reshaping industries worldwide, making it essential for Pakistan’s education sector to keep pace with international trends.

Under the new directive, the HEC will assess degree programs based on several key factors, including employability, industry demand, future growth potential, and alignment with Pakistan’s development goals. Programs found to have outdated curricula, limited market value, or poor employment outcomes could face restructuring or modernization.

A high-level task force consisting of academics, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and policy experts will also be formed to recommend long-term reforms. The objective is to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the practical skills required by modern industries.

The review is expected to place greater emphasis on high-demand fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Robotics, Automation, Renewable Energy, Climate Science, FinTech, and Digital Health. These sectors are increasingly driving economic growth and creating new employment opportunities around the world.

The government also wants universities to integrate essential future-ready skills across all disciplines. These include digital literacy, data analytics, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving, and climate awareness. Education experts believe such skills will become just as important as traditional academic knowledge in the coming years.

According to recent global workforce reports, AI and digital transformation are expected to create millions of new jobs while simultaneously reducing demand for certain routine occupations. This shift has prompted many countries to redesign higher education systems to meet changing labor market requirements.
